Sometimes less is better. Especially when it comes to domain names. What do I mean? Read on to find out…
The Challenge Module Two – Day One: Get Your Keyword Optimized Domain, Hosting and Free Trial WPD Account
Last year I tried WPD but didn’t persist as I found some issues getting it to work. I am sure it was the particular domain registrar that I used for the domain (I only had 1 with them) but as I had already spent too much time trying to get it to work I moved on. At this time I can set up a WordPress blog with my choice of plugins and themes in under 30 minutes so I figured spending any more time with Tech support was eating into site creation time.
However, I figured I would try them again this year.
I watched both of Kenny’s videos on about choosing a domain name. I agreed with what Kenny has to say as I have found that the more exact a domain matches your target keyword the easier it is to get ranked high in the SERP’s, initially anyway. A keyword with very low competition, hosted on an exact match keyword domain, with unique content can get quite a high early ranking. I’m talking first page, sometimes as high as the top 3. If anything about the site is lacking, however, Google will usually “fix” that rank up with a week or 2, knocking it down a few places, even few pages. These positions can be clawed back with time, content or links or combination of all three.
So off I went and acquired my domain name. I used the domain module in MS all the way through and used Namecheap as I hadn’t used them before. Up to this point I have been using 1and1.com. You save a few bucks as they cost around $6 to $7 but you have to wait a day or 2 for the custom DNS to resolve. I didn’t have this problem with Namecheap as it happened as soon as I updated the nameservers to my Hostgator account (saved a little time here as I already have an account there).
The Domain module is MS is very easy, from start to finish. I have avoided using it as I have my own ways of finding highly keyword rich domains quite easily but I was very pleasantly surprised. And I was also happy with the speed at which the domain became available for use through Namecheap.
I then went onto the next step and signed up for my free trial account with WPDirect. Sign up was easy enough. Hopefully I will have more success this time around actually using the service.
I won’t spend too much time trying to get it to work for the reasons mentioned above. Until tomorrow…
